An Aussie Christmas

The author/illustrator Kilmeny Niland was an extremely talented author and illustrator. Here is one picture book she illustrated called: ‘An Aussie Night Before Christmas.’

The story is a humorous re-write of the traditional poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” It depicts an Australian Christmas with a Santa who ‘bellows’ to his kangaroo-reindeers. Because it’s a hot Summer in Australia at Christmas time, Santa allows the reindeers a drink of water from the tank to quench their thirst. There is all the excitement of the night before Christmas, with the charm of the old poem combining well with kangaroos, a rusty old ute, and a pot-bellied Santa.

Illustrator Kilmeny Niland had a beautiful way with her illustrations. She and her twin sister Deborah Niland were the talented and gifted daughters of famous Australian authors Ruth Park and D’Arcy Niland.
Ahhh those pesky possums! 😁
‘Some Tucker and beer’ I remember the fun of leaving food out for Santa on Christmas Eve. The next day we would check to see if the food was gone or had been nibbled or drunk.

Described on eBay as “Australia’s bestselling Christmas book” it is easy to see why it has become a favourite. Get a copy and read it to your children this Christmas for a bit of fun!
